“O`CURIO MORE THAN A BRAND IS A WAY OF LIVING”

o`curio is a French brand that was born out of a deep admiration for the crafts and talents of indigenous artisans.

Unfortunately, many of their designs and techniques are stolen away by big fashion brands that fail to acknowledge their origin, their historical meaning and the heritage behind the artwork artisans create. Furthermore, some of these fashion brands pay miserable wages compared to the intense and demanding work each piece requires. At O`curio we believe that fair labor, visibility and sustainability are key to the empowerment and economic development of the underserve communities we collaborate with.

o`curio has taken the mission to acknowledge, honor and preserve the crafts and talents of the communities we collaborate with, by reintroducing their designs and weaving techniques into the contemporary fashion world making each piece a unique combo of design, sustainability and timelessness. 

We chose to work with the pedal loom not only because it is so beautiful, natural, raw, and sustainable, but it’s our unique signature in the product, you will never find a poncho that is exactly the same as another. The physical effort that weaving through this technique requires is what makes our products so precious. The other reason why we are proud to work with the pedal loom is that the fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world and by using the pedal loom we minimize the polluting impact this industry has!

Moreover, We have renegotiated higher wages with the artisans compared to what they were usually paid and we have brought into the negotiation table external institutions that protect the artisans rights in that region to ensure the fairness of the set wages. For instance, we give them an extra percentage as royalties for allowing us to use their artwork in our products and they also get an extra from our overall production costs.

o`curio believes in slow fashion and a conscious consumption and is on a constant effort to make a positive impact in this world. We strive to make our brand as sustainable as possible and we have started by choosing a production method- the pedal loom- that requires no electricity, nor expels CO2 emissions. This production method also allows us to produce only the amount of fabric that we really need which allows us to generate almost zero waste.

We only create fabrics from natural fibers like cotton and wool that can be easily breakdown and many of our dyes are plant or insect based.

Our wool yarns are made with a spinning wheel which ensures that we will not be generating more than we need for our products. We only produce the strictly needed materials, taking care of not over producing or over stocking.

Even though we are trying hard to be sustainable in every step of our supply chain, we have come to find limitations at the present moment, such as: The sourcing of our materials, it`s been complicated to trace accurately the origin of all our raw materials to state they are a 100% organic. Dyes: even though some of our products do use natural dyes coming from plants and insects we have found that materials such as cotton do not absorb well these natural dyes, which end up compromising the quality and durability of the color in our garments. The CO2 emitted by the air transportation of our products is another challenge we face.

We believe that being transparent about our limitations can only make us stronger. We are learning in each step of the way, acknowledging our limitations and we will continue to work hard towards improving and finding solutions to tackle our weak points.
