"Hand Weaving heritage and culture in each piece"
The creation of our brand meets a double objective: to create unique and magnificent clothes and to support the artisans who are at their origin, by promoting their ancestral techniques and crafts. We are honored to work with two workshops in the city of Oaxaca, Mexico.
Our workshop run by master artisan Gabino is specialized in the use of cotton. They use the pedal loom to create our beautiful cotton ponchos. Each poncho is made using approx..1400 yarns and takes around 20h of hard work.
Master artisan Gabino is the master mind behind the precious artwork weaved in into our garments.
Here is the story of the beautiful artwork.
Our artwork created by master Gabino depicts the skin of the rattle snake when it is shredding. He got inspired to do this due to the current sanitary crisis, for him this time is a time of change and transition. We are being pushed into a different era. We are leaving behind who we were, we are all changing skin and becoming a better version of ourselves, we are moving away from and defying the status quo, we are redefining the rules of this game of life, we are raising our consciousness and becoming better versions of ourselves. When he explained to the founder what this artwork meant, she was in awe for it became clear to her that this was the artisan and artwork the brand needed to partner with since this is exactly O`curio s mindset and timing of birth!
When he explained to the founder what this work of art meant, she was speechless and it became clear to her that this was the artisan and artwork the brand had to partner with, because those are the brands values and O`curio vibe!
Our workshop run by master artisan Samuel is specialized in wool. They use the pedal loom to weave the exquisite wool ponchos and use the spinning wheel to create the wool yarns. Moreover, they have mastered the use of natural dyes coming from plants and insects to create all range of colors. This workshop is so aligned with O`curio in their sustainability stand.
This is how O`curio found 2 amazing partners that are aligned with it´s mindset, vision and mission and we couldn’t be more grateful for that!
We show our gratitude by publicly acknowledging who they are, what they do and the cultural meaning behind it. But most importantly, we have renegotiated higher wages with the artisans compared to what they were usually paid and we have brought into the negotiation table external institutions that protect the artisans rights in that region to ensure the fairness of the wages set. For instance, we give them an extra percentage as royalties for allowing us to use their artwork in our products and they also get an extra percentage in our overall production costs.
Wearing O`curio means wearing a part of this story!
